The ReconciliACTION Network (RAN) is a youth
initiated and youth run group. It was formed in
early 2002 by a small group of Indigenous and
non-Indigenous young people from Australians for
Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTaR), the NSW
Reconciliation Council and the Edmund Rice Centre
for Justice and Community Education.
The Network quickly
grew to include members from a number of high
schools, universities, TAFEs, student unions,
Indigenous organisations, community groups and
Reconciliation bodies. Our members represent a
wide range of political and social interests and
come from metropolitan, regional and rural NSW.
The Network is open to
all interested people aged between 16 and 29.

Our members come together to work on projects and
campaigns. Our name – ‘ReconciliACTION’ – reflects
the belief that Reconciliation has to be about
more than just words. It is about making changes
through action - and young people have an
important role in play in determining those
changes in their community.
For our projects we
also operate as a ‘Network’, bringing together a
range of youth, social justice and community
organisations to raise the profile of issues
relevant to Reconciliation and Indigenous rights.
The Network's aims include: ·Education; ·Advocacy;
·Support for young people working to overcome
racism in their local communities; and ·Skills and
leadership development.
Although we are a relatively new organisation
(less than one year old) some of our projects we
have worked on include:
- A Website (www.reconciliaction.org.au);
- An Education/
Action Kit, researched and written by RAN
members;
- A Writing and
Graphics Competition for NSW High School
Students;
- Participation
and organisation of many community events,
including Reconciliation & Treaty Forums
- A Social Justice
music concert, involving Indigenous and
non-Indigenous bands.
We have also held
two successful State-wide youth Gatherings.
Speakers at the
events included:
-
Linda Burney (Current NSW Labor
Candidate & previously Director General of the
Department of Aboriginal Affairs),
-
Rick Farley (NSW
Reconciliation Council & previously President of
the National Farmers Federation),
-
Kerry Nettle (The Greens & Australia’s youngest
Federal Senator) and
-
Moksha Watts (President of
the National Union of Students, 2002).
The Network holds regular meetings close to
public transport, usually at the University of
Technology.

State-wide Youth
Gathering, April 2003
Our biggest event yet is coming up on the
23rd-24th April. The 2-day Conference will
involve speakers and Workshops across a range of
issues. The confirmed speakers include Dr Mick
Dodson from the Institute of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander Studies and Senator Aden
Ridgeway.
It will be a youth only event, organised and run
by RAN members, and will be an opportunity for
participants to discuss their views about racism
and reconciliation with other young people. The
focus of the two days will be on determined
priority areas and turning those ideas into
action & future projects.
There will also be a
number of skills workshops, and several
opportunities to hear from different
organisations about some of the great work being
done at the grass roots.
The Conference cost - $20 - will include most
meals and accommodation (over Wednesday night).
Sponsorship will be available for young people
who need to travel interstate to attend the
Gathering.
