RELEASE
Historic agreement with Lane Cove Council
Lane Cove
Council tonight became the first council on Sydney’s north
shore to sign a principles of cooperation agreement with
the Metropolitan Aboriginal Land Council.
The agreement establishes formal communication,
consultation and negotiation processes between Metro and
Lane Cove Council. It also opens the way for possible
future cross cultural training and joint community
development initiatives.
Metro Land Council Chairman, Rob Welsh, said he hoped the
agreement would lead to a greater understanding of
Aboriginal culture and history among the broader
community.
“We would like to work with Council to promote awareness
of the cultural and spiritual ties of Aboriginal people to
the Lane Cove area,” Mr Welsh said.
“In particular, there may be the opportunity for Lane Cove
Council to consider Aboriginal names for new boundaries,
sites or streets,” he said.
Mr Welsh said the agreement formalized already strong ties
between the Lane Cove and inner city Aboriginal
communities.
These have included student exchanges between St Ignatius
College, Riverview and Alexandria Park Community School as
well as the unveiling of a plaque acknowledging the
Cameraygal resistance to British invasion at Woodford Bay.
Mr Welsh paid tribute to the leadership and goodwill of
the Lane Cove Council in signing the agreement.
“Lane Cove’s Councillors and staff have shown that there
is nothing to fear and everything to gain by working
cooperatively with Aboriginal people and their land
council. We hope their example is followed by all other
local governments throughout Sydney,” he said.
Mr Welsh said the agreement would never have taken place
without the work of community groups including the Lane
Cove Residents for Reconciliation and Historical Society.
“In particular, Kerrie McKenzie has been tireless in her
efforts to bring our two communities closer together. We
could never have achieved this without her support,” he
said.
